Hello, my name is Brian Kirschensteiner and I would like to welcome you to The Cherrystone Studio online gallery.

In 2001, I opened for business with the goal to provide refined, heirloom quality work to those who will settle for no less.

Much of my studio work builds on the beautiful Northern Renaissance painting tradition of my forebears. This style requires assured drawing skill, fine attention to detail, and the demanding technique of building up mulitple layers of glaze in pure color. This particular mode of painting is, in many ways, the seminal force behind much of the academic painting of the ensuing generations. It serves as a great foundation for the art of portraiture.

I consider myself fortunate to have paintings in collections the world over and to have worked on some very unique projects, including a national monument. I guarantee the absolute best cost : quality ratio in the business. This is due in large part to the fact that a portion of my 'payment' is knowing that I have produced something of indefinable value for someone. By employing the finest materials available, the work is something sure to be cherished by my patron and by their family for generations to come. I would be pleased to add your commission to my growing list of accomplishments.

Scouting for a spot to paint near my home with Foster.
Getting a bit more personal...

I was born in Washington D.C. and spent many years in Chicago before moving to Michigan in 1986. Spending much of my formative years in those two cities exposed me to a great wealth of art and culture. I knew early on I would somehow be a part of it. I seem to recall that my parents wanted me to be either a priest or a clown. In some ways, ending up a painter is a combination of both.

I received my education at Michigan State University. Beginning my education concentrating on Biochemistry and Genetics, I soon relented to my artistic yearnings. I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art- concentrations in painting, sculpture, and photography. Shortly after graduating, I was offered a position at the Michigan State University Museum. The offer was hard to turn down so I accepted and stayed on until August of 2003. I 'retired' from the Museum as Assistant Curator of Exhibits. Including the time I worked with the Museum as a student, I spent nearly 10 years there. The decision to leave was a difficult one but, to be sure, the unique experiences I had in that time are priceless. I'm confident those lessons will continue to inform my decisions for the rest of my life.

I have focused all of my attention on The Cherrystone Studio since my departure. Thus far my experiences have been tremendously rewarding, greatly exceeding anything I could have imagined. To create something of lasting value for someone truly is a very special feeling. Being able to paint each and every day is a dream come true. I have dedicated the rest of my life to this pursuit.

Every artist needs a comfortable and inspiring place to dream. I found mine in a small town called Ovid, Michigan, where I live with my wife Ingrid. Placed in the middle of the beautiful countryside, Ovid is an idyllic, quiet town. With a rich and enchanted history, and 19th century architecture everywhere, 'Rockwellian' moments seem to happen each day outside my studio window as I work. I'm proud to be a Midwestern artist, and lucky to have Ovid as a home for both myself and my studio.
